COASTALSS

Extensive range of Stainless Steel timber connectors for Australian conditions

When to use Stainless

Stainless steel is recommended for use in coastal areas due to its increased resistance to corrosion compared to galvanised steel.

The salt in the air and water in coastal areas can cause galvanised steel to rust and deteriorate quickly. Meaning a short lifespan and the need for replacement components.

Stainless steel has a longer lifespan and requires less maintenance, which can result in significant savings in the long run.

The importance of correct material installation

Galvanised steel will corrode when installed in a marine environment. This can also lead to product and structural failure.

It is crucial to use the right components for each installation. There are many factors that play a part in defining which products are best suited a particular job. One of the main considerations in Australia is the proximity to the ocean.

304 vs 316 Stainless

If you are in close proximity to breaking surf then 316, albeit more expensive, is the only sensible long-lasting material for your build.

However, if you are in the same area as a sheltered bay – then 304 may be more than sufficient for a successful, long-term solution.

This really comes down to your structural engineer or project manager to know your specific site and its exposure levels to the elements to appropriately designate correct material use.

It is also interesting to note, that unexposed (for example within the cladding of a house) will generally no longer require the same steel grade as an exposed structure on the same site (something like a pergola or deck).
